Donghaksa Temple, Buddhist temple in Gongju, South Korea
Donghaksa is a Buddhist temple set in a valley of Gyeryongsan Mountain in South Korea, surrounded by forested slopes. The complex is home to a community of nuns who follow a daily schedule of religious study and practice.
The temple is said to have been founded in the early 8th century and was later rebuilt during the early period of the Goryeo Kingdom. That reconstruction tied the site closely to the protection of the new dynasty.
The temple serves as a training center where Buddhist nuns practice and preserve traditional teachings through daily rituals. Visitors can observe how this community maintains religious customs that have shaped Korean Buddhist life over centuries.
The temple is reached on foot or by local bus, which stops at the lower end of the valley before the main complex. From there, a clear path leads the rest of the way up to the buildings.
The path leading up to the temple is lined with cherry trees for a long stretch, forming a natural tunnel of blossoms in spring. This section of the walk is considered one of the finest cherry blossom paths in the region.
