Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area

Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area, Protected forest and wetlands zone in Champasak Province, Laos.

Description

Dong Hua Sao is a protected area in Champasak Province that encompasses forests and wetlands across a large territory. The land rises from Mekong River lowlands in the west toward the eastern Bolaven Plateau, creating varied landscapes at different elevations.

History

The area began as a small forest reserve in the 1950s but was significantly expanded over time. It received full protected status in the 1990s after the region had experienced logging pressures.

Culture

Ethnic communities live within the protected boundaries and maintain traditional ways of life while participating in conservation initiatives. Visitors can observe how residents work with the land and practice sustainable resource management in their daily lives.

Practical

Visitors can best arrange their trip from Pakse, which sits relatively close by and offers access to the area. Booking a guided tour is advisable to navigate the terrain and make the most of your time there.
