Dong Hua Sao National Protected Area

The national protected area covers 1,100 square kilometers, rising from the Mekong River lowlands into the eastern Bolaven Plateau at 1,000 meters elevation.

Initially established as a forest reserve of 260 square kilometers in 1950, the area expanded and gained protected status in 1993 following extensive logging activities.

Local ethnic groups maintain traditional practices within the protected boundaries while engaging in conservation efforts and sustainable resource management programs.

Visitors can arrange guided tours and transportation from Pakse city, located 30 kilometers west of the protected area entrance.

The protected zone contains critical wetland habitats for Siamese crocodiles and serves as a sanctuary for yellow-cheeked gibbons and rare hornbill species.
