Royal necropolis of Byblos, Archaeological necropolis in Byblos, Lebanon.
The royal tombs contain nine underground burial chambers from the Bronze Age, holding stone sarcophagi of multiple Byblos rulers.
French archaeologist Pierre Montet discovered the necropolis in 1922 following a coastal landslide that revealed the first underground tomb structure.
The tombs display Egyptian architectural influences, featuring ceremonial altars where priests conducted rituals for the departed souls.
The necropolis stands inside ancient Byblos walls, on a promontory overlooking two harbors, accessible through marked pathways near the archaeological site.
The sarcophagus of Ahiram bears the earliest known complete example of the Phoenician alphabet inscription, marking a turning point in writing systems.
