Sidi Bou Afi Lighthouse

Sidi Bou Afi Lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower in El Jadida, Morocco, that rises 45 meters high and is topped with a black lantern and gallery. The structure stands at the highest point of the town, about 200 meters from the shore, and has served as a navigation aid for ships on the Atlantic.

Construction of the lighthouse began in 1914 and was completed in 1916, marking an important step forward in maritime safety along Morocco's Atlantic coast. Its completion came during a period when sea traffic was growing and better navigation tools became necessary.

The lighthouse name comes from a nearby marabout shrine, showing how maritime structures are woven into the local spiritual landscape in Moroccan coastal towns. Visitors can sense this blend of practical infrastructure and religious significance as they explore the area.

The hilltop location makes it visible from many places in town and easy to spot from a distance. It is best explored during daylight when visibility is clear and you can observe the lighting mechanisms at the top more easily.

The lighthouse emits three white flashes every five seconds with a range of about 30 nautical miles across the Atlantic. This rhythmic blinking pattern is recognizable to ships from great distances, allowing sailors to pinpoint the location precisely.
