Court Church in Cetinje

The Court Church in Cetinje is a Serbian Orthodox sanctuary featuring white marble tombs and a gilded iconostasis in the heart of the city. The interior combines traditional Orthodox architecture with royal furnishings and displays religious artwork of considerable craftsmanship.

The church was built in 1890 by King Nikola I on the site of a 15th century monastery that had been destroyed. This construction transformed the location from a monastic space into a royal chapel and reinforced Cetinje as the country's spiritual and political center.

The church serves as a sacred burial site for Montenegro's ruling family and connects the country's religious traditions with its royal history. The ornate interior decorations reflect how faith and power were intertwined in the nation's past.

The church is located in central Cetinje and can be easily reached on foot from the main town area. You can view the interior when visiting the site, which operates as part of the History Museum of Montenegro.

The church holds the tombs of several members of the royal family, including King Nikola and Queen Milena. A memorable moment occurred in 1989 when a large reburial ceremony drew crowds who came to honor this royal sanctuary.
