Maliwan, Village in Kawthaung Township, Myanmar
Maliwan is a village in Kawthaung Township located in the Taninthayi Region of southern Myanmar near the Thai border. The area is known for natural hot springs whose waters are channeled into bathing pools for visitors.
The area was originally an administrative center until 1891 when official functions shifted to the better harbor at Kawthaung. This move happened because larger vessels could anchor there more easily.
The area is shaped by a mixed population that reflects Chinese and Thai traditions in their daily habits and local customs. This cultural variety influences how the place looks and feels.
The hot springs are located about 8 kilometers from Maliwan Waterfall and can be reached on foot or by boat. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are more comfortable.
British parliamentary records from 1890 document failed tin mining operations in this area during colonial times. This lost mining industry has completely faded from local memory today.
