Grachtengordel, UNESCO World Heritage canal district in Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Grachtengordel forms a horseshoe-shaped network of four main canals surrounding the medieval center of Amsterdam, spanning several kilometers of waterways.

The construction of these canals began in 1613 during the Dutch Golden Age, when Amsterdam needed to expand its boundaries due to increased trade and population growth.

The canal houses display traditional Dutch architectural elements with narrow facades, ornate gables, and large windows that reflect the merchants' prosperity of the 1600s.

The district includes over 1000 protected buildings, numerous hotels, restaurants, and museums accessible by foot, bicycle, or boat tours along the waterways.

Each canal serves a specific function: Singel was a medieval moat, Herengracht housed the wealthy, Keizersgracht attracted merchants, and Prinsengracht contained small businesses.
