Kortegolfzendstation Flevo, Radio transmission station in Zeewolde, Netherlands.
Kortegolfzendstation Flevo is a shortwave transmission facility in Zeewolde with four transmitters of 500 kilowatts each. The installation uses 17 directional antennas for global broadcast coverage plus two additional antennas dedicated to European transmissions.
The station opened in 1985 as a broadcast facility for Radio Nederland Wereldomroep sending signals to Europe, North Africa, and West Africa. A major modernization occurred in 2018 when transmission towers were removed and replaced with new structures.
The facility represents the Netherlands' international communication capabilities, enabling connections between military headquarters and field units or ships across vast distances.
The location sits in open countryside where the antenna fields are visible from outside. The 2018 renovation resulted in shorter structures than the original 135-meter towers, making the facility less visually dominant in the landscape.
The facility now operates at reduced power levels under Dutch Ministry of Defence control and serves as a backup communications hub for military purposes. This shift from broadcasting to military communication represents a significant change in the facility's operational role.
