Kopa Śmierci, Mountain summit in Stolowe Mountains, Poland.
Kopa Śmierci is a mountain summit in the Stolowe Mountains of southwestern Poland, reaching around 830 meters (2,720 ft), with exposed sandstone rock outcrops near the top. The southwestern slopes are heavily forested with spruce trees that give the mountain a dark, dense appearance when viewed from the valley.
The summit's name derives from the German term Totenkopf, used when the region was populated largely by German speakers before the Second World War. After the war, the area became part of Poland and most German place names were replaced with Polish ones, though the meaning of this name was carried over into the new form.
The name Kopa Śmierci translates from Polish as "Death Mound" and echoes an older German name used when the region had a large German-speaking population. Hikers on the trail today still pass old stone markers that reflect this shared past.
The summit is reached from Duszniki-Zdrój via marked hiking trails, which is the most common starting point for visitors. Footwear with good grip matters here, as some sections pass over wet rock and the weather in the Stolowe Mountains can shift without warning.
Despite what the name suggests, there is no recorded tragic event linked to this summit, and the name most likely refers to the shape of the rocky top, which can resemble a skull when seen from a distance. This is a pattern found in several other European peaks that share similar names for the same visual reason.
