Bear Fountain in Wrocław, Bronze fountain in Market Square, Poland.
The Bear Fountain in Wrocław features a bronze Asian black bear mounted on a tree trunk in the heart of Market Square. Standing at 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall, the sculpture includes a mechanical knob that visitors can turn to release water through the bear's nostrils.
The fountain was created in 1904 by artist Ernst Moritz Geyger as part of the square's features. The original bronze work disappeared during World War II, but was faithfully recreated by sculptor R. Zamorski in 1998 for the square.
The fountain's design grew from the artist's personal need for water on a hot day in the square. Today it serves as a gathering point where visitors pause to interact with the bronze sculpture and experience this local landmark.
The fountain sits in the center of Market Square and is easy to find while exploring the main plaza. Be prepared for crowds during busy times, especially when markets or outdoor events are happening nearby.
When first built, the fountain featured a drinking cup attached by a chain to allow people to easily access water. This practical element was removed over time, reflecting how public artworks adapt their function as the city evolves.
