Jacob's Well, Archaeological sanctuary in Tell Balata, Palestine
Jacob's Well is a spring in Tell Balata, Palestine, set within a shaft carved deep into the bedrock. The circular opening is roughly two meters across and leads down more than thirty meters through walls of hewn stone.
The spring was established in antiquity and carries the name of the biblical patriarch. Over the centuries it became a place of religious importance and a destination for believers from several traditions.
Three major religions consider this water source meaningful, with Christians particularly noting the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman described in biblical accounts point.
Visitors should coordinate their arrival with local religious institutions, as access is restricted. The entrance is located within a building reached through Tell Balata.
Water still rises from the depths into the shaft and is drawn by pilgrims. The system functions on the same principle as it did when it was built many centuries ago.
