The building was commissioned in 1455 by Sayf al-Din Birdibak al-Ashrafi and initially served as both a place of learning and prayer. It held religious importance for the city across multiple centuries.
The structure displays architectural elements from Egyptian and Syrian traditions, featuring marble panels, floral motifs, and Quranic verses carved throughout its interior spaces.
