Welayat Mosque

Welayat Mosque, Mamluk mosque in Gaza City, Palestine

The Welayat Mosque on Omar Mukhtar Street displays Mamluk architectural features with intricately carved stone walls and large domes. The building showcases detailed stonework and decorative elements characteristic of this style.

The mosque was built in 1344 and received major additions in 1584 when Ahmed Bey, administrator of the Wilayat Dimashq region, commissioned expansions to the western section. These modifications shaped the structure into its current form.

The mosque serves as a gathering place where residents come together for prayer and community events throughout the week. It plays a central role in the neighborhood's daily rhythm and social connections.

The mosque is located in central Gaza City and accessible on foot from nearby streets. Visitors should plan their visit around prayer times and dress respectfully when approaching the building.

The entrance bears an inscription with the name of Mamluk Sultan Qalawun, marking the building's early origins. Inside, a preserved white marble minbar catches the eye and has been noted by travelers across centuries.
