Sremski Karlovci Orthodox Cathedral, Orthodox cathedral in Sremski Karlovci, Serbia.
Sremski Karlovci Orthodox Cathedral is a classical-style church with two towers and baroque ornamentation on the facade, sitting on Branko Radičević Square in the center of town. It stands next to the Patriarchate building, making it part of a wider group of religious structures in the same area.
The cathedral was built between 1758 and 1762 under Bishop Pavle Nenadović, replacing an older church that had stood on the same spot. The design was drawn up by Zaharije Orfelin, who worked as both an architect and an artist.
The cathedral is the main church of the Eparchy of Srem and remains in active use for services today. Visitors who step inside will find a large iconostasis separating the altar from the nave, painted with figures from Orthodox tradition.
The cathedral sits on the main square of Sremski Karlovci and is easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the town center. A visit pairs well with a walk around the surrounding streets and the other historical buildings on the same square.
The iconostasis inside was made by Teodor Kračun and Jakov Orfelin, two Serbian artists of the 18th century, and is one of the largest of its kind in the region. The carvings and paintings are detailed enough that it takes several minutes to take in all the figures.
