Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit, Nature reserve along the Danube River in Vojvodina, Serbia.
The Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit is a nature reserve covering about 4,800 hectares of wetlands, forests, and waterways along the Danube in southeastern Bačka. The landscape consists of channels, islands, and meandering river sections that create a complex pattern of water and land.
The area received official protection status in 1998, preserving one of the last remaining natural floodplains of the Middle Danube. This designation recognized the ecological importance of the river system and halted further changes from human activities.
The reserve holds meaning for locals and visitors interested in understanding how river ecosystems work and sustain life. People come here to see nature in its uncontrolled state, where water and land meet in ways that feel far removed from managed landscapes.
The reserve lies roughly 20 kilometers from Novi Sad and is accessible by the E75 highway. Visitors should arrange tours and boat trips in advance through the managing authority to make the most of their visit.
The wetland supports around 172 bird species and 46 fish species, including Black Storks and White-tailed Eagles that find food and nesting places here. Since 1989 it has been recognized as an Important Bird Area, making it a destination for those watching birds.
