Staro Hopovo monastery, Serbian Orthodox monastery in Fruska Gora, Serbia
Staro Hopovo Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in the Fruska Gora region with a church built from stone and brick featuring a central dome. Dormitory buildings surround the church on its southern, western, and northern sides, creating an enclosed monastic complex.
The original monastery was founded between 1496 and 1520 by Despot Djordje Brankovic as an important medieval religious site. An earthquake in 1751 destroyed the structure, leading to its reconstruction the following year.
The interior walls display complete fresco paintings that cover the surfaces from floor to vault. The carved iconostasis was created by Jefrem Isajlovic through detailed handwork spanning several years in the late 1700s.
The site is located about 3 kilometers east of Novo Hopovo Monastery and is accessible via paved roads winding through the Fruska Gora landscape. Wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is hilly and best explored on foot.
The monastery grounds contain natural springs with distinct properties: a cold drinking water spring and a sulfur spring that maintains a steady temperature. These water sources have drawn visitors for centuries and add to the site's character.
