University Library "Svetozar Marković", Academic library in Belgrade, Serbia
The University Library Svetozar Marković is the central library of the University of Belgrade, holding over 1.7 million publications across many scientific fields. The building spans multiple floors with specialized reading rooms, archives, and work areas for students and researchers.
The institution emerged in 1838 from the Lyceum of the Principality of Serbia. In the 1920s it received major support from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, which expanded its collections and facilities.
The library preserves rare Cyrillic manuscripts and oriental books that show the written heritage of Serbia and remain accessible to visitors. Walking through the collections gives a sense of connection to Serbia's literary past.
The library sits on King Alexander Boulevard near several university faculties and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors receive research help, access to interlibrary loan services, and specialized work areas for focused study.
Every year on May 24 the library celebrates Library Day to honor the Slavic educators Cyril and Methodius. Educational programs and cultural events take place that highlight the importance of written heritage.
