University Library "Svetozar Marković", Academic library in Belgrade, Serbia
The University Library Svetozar Marković is the central library of the University of Belgrade, located on King Alexander Boulevard. The building has several floors with reading rooms, archive areas, and workspaces for students and researchers from many fields.
The library traces its origins to 1838, when it grew out of the Lyceum of the Principality of Serbia. In the 1920s, support from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace helped expand its collections and facilities considerably.
The library holds rare Cyrillic manuscripts and oriental books that visitors can see in the collections. These materials reflect how many different writing traditions have shaped Serbia's written culture over the centuries.
The library sits on King Alexander Boulevard, close to several university faculties, and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Once inside, visitors can use research assistance services and interlibrary loans, and find quiet workspaces for focused study.
Every year on May 24, the library marks Library Day in honor of the Slavic scholars Cyril and Methodius. On that day, educational programs and cultural events take place inside the building, bringing the theme of writing and reading into focus.
