Nevyansk

Nevyansk sits in the eastern Urals along the Neyva River at 240 meters elevation, about 97 kilometers north of Yekaterinburg in Sverdlovsk Oblast. The town spreads as an industrial and trading center next to the river, surrounded by forested landscapes.

The town was founded in 1701 with the building of an iron foundry and grew into a metallurgical center under the Demidov family's control. This family shaped the region's economy for over 2 centuries.

The Nevyansk School of icon painting developed among Old Believers who settled here while working in local factories. This artistic tradition continues to shape the cultural life of the place today.

Visitors can reach Nevyansk by express train from Yekaterinburg or Nizhny Tagil, with journeys offering views of the Ural Mountains. The best time to visit is from May through September, when the weather is milder and the surroundings look most green.

The Leaning Tower of Nevyansk, built between 1725 and 1740, tilts intentionally to the side and resembles the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At around 60 meters tall, it stands as one of the world's oldest deliberately inclined structures.
