Grotto in Alexander Park, Tsarskoe Selo

The Grotto pavilion at Tsarskoe Selo features classical proportions with rounded corners, sculptural niches, and a central dome lit by four dormer windows set into the roof. The structure functions as a display space showcasing historical elements and furnishings from the 18th century.

Construction began in 1755 under Empress Elizabeth with architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli and was completed during the 1760s under Catherine II. The pavilion was built as part of the grand redesign of the imperial palace grounds.

Stone carvings of Neptune and dolphin-shaped capitals decorate the windows and pillars, reflecting the building's strong connection to water and the sea. These details reveal how the pavilion's design tells a story through its ornamental features.

The pavilion sits within Alexander Park and is reached through the museum grounds of Tsarskoe Selo. Wear comfortable shoes since you will walk through gardens to reach it, and the entire site covers a large area.

The pavilion's doors and windows display wrought-iron grilles adorned with gilded copper ornaments that were added in 1792. These metal screens represent the careful craftsmanship applied to both security and visual appeal during restoration work.
