Göteborgs Remfabrik – Textile Heritage Centre, Industrial heritage site in Gårda, Sweden
Gothenburg Textile Heritage Centre is a former factory where belts and ribbons were woven from yarn and silk. The buildings still house the original machinery, transmission systems, and work tools from the early 1900s arranged exactly as they were used.
The factory was established in 1891 and operated continuously for almost a century until 1977. In its early decades, advanced weaving machines controlled by Jacquard systems were introduced, marking an important technological step forward.
This place reflects the textile work that once employed many people and shaped the city's character. Visitors can see the machinery in the spaces where workers spent their days producing cloth and ribbons.
The site is accessible on foot and easy to navigate, with machinery spread throughout the original work areas. It helps to plan your visit during the day when natural light fills the buildings and details of the machinery are easier to see.
Volunteers still operate the historic machinery to produce ribbons and lace fabrics. These handmade items available for purchase show that the factory keeps the craft alive rather than simply preserving it as a historical display.
