UOB Plaza, commercial offices in Downtown Core, Singapore
UOB Plaza is a building complex in the Raffles Place financial district of Singapore, made up of two towers of different heights that share a common podium at their base. The taller of the two towers has 77 floors, while the shorter one stands at a considerably lower height, together forming one of the most recognizable office addresses in the city.
Plans for a new United Overseas Bank headquarters date back to the late 1960s, but economic conditions led to long delays before the project was revived in the late 1980s. The shorter tower had already been completed in 1973 and was later renovated, while the taller one was finished in 1992, with the full complex inaugurated in 1995.
The name comes from United Overseas Bank, which uses this complex as its main headquarters in Singapore. The open plaza at the base of the towers is a meeting point for office workers during the day, giving the area a rhythm shaped by the schedules of the financial district around it.
The complex sits right next to Raffles Place MRT station, making it easy to reach on foot from the train. The surrounding area has shopping centers, cafes, and restaurants within a short walk, which makes planning a visit straightforward.
The taller tower was designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange, who took inspiration from the US Bank Tower in Los Angeles when shaping its overall form. Despite once being among the tallest structures in Singapore, it has since been surpassed by the Tanjong Pagar Centre.
