Masjid Haji Yusoff, Historic mosque in Kovan, Singapore
Masjid Haji Yusoff sits on Hillside Drive near Upper Serangoon Road and features white walls with a central dome as its main architectural element. The structure accommodates around 400 worshippers and is maintained by the local community.
This mosque was founded in 1921 on land donated by Gujarati merchant Ahmad Mohamed Salleh Angullia. Major renovation took place in 1973 when the dome was added to the structure.
The neighborhood name Sembahyang Tng combines the Malay word for prayer with a Hokkien term for pavilion, showing how different communities have shaped this place. Visitors from all backgrounds pass through the area, reflecting Singapore's diverse society.
The mosque is easily accessible in a residential area with good transport links to the neighborhood. Visitors should wear modest clothing and be mindful of prayer times, especially on Fridays when the space fills with worshippers.
An Islamic school started on these grounds in the 1930s, later merged with another school and relocated to Toa Payoh in a separate chapter of local education history. Few visitors realize this teaching institution once thrived at this location before moving elsewhere.
