National Orchid Garden, Orchidarium in Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore
The National Orchid Garden is a collection of more than 1000 orchid species and 2000 hybrid varieties spread across four seasonal zones. The grounds feature multiple exhibition areas including a climate-controlled house and open displays that cover the site under the sky.
The orchid breeding program started in 1928, establishing the site as a research and development center for the Southeast Asian region. Over the decades, the collection expanded and shaped knowledge about orchid cultivation across the area.
The garden names special orchid hybrids after visiting dignitaries and state guests as part of Singapore's diplomatic traditions. This practice reflects how the place has become a symbol of the country's international relationships beyond its botanical role.
The garden opens daily and visitors can explore the different zones in any order they prefer. It helps to wear proper footwear and set aside time for the climate-controlled house, as temperatures there are noticeably cooler.
The Sembcorp Cool House keeps temperatures between 16 and 23 degrees Celsius and grows orchid species from high-elevation mountain regions. This special area shows how different orchids are depending on where they naturally come from.
