Istana Woodneuk, Former royal mansion near Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore
Istana Woodneuk is a two-story mansion near Singapore Botanic Gardens, located between Holland Road and Tyersall Avenue within dense vegetation. The structure still displays remnants of its distinctive blue-tiled roof and classical architectural features.
An earlier mansion from the 1800s was replaced in 1935 by this palace, commissioned by Sultan Ibrahim of Johor to mark his 62nd birthday and four decades of rule. The property took on a different purpose after 1942 during wartime conditions.
The house was home to various members of the Johor royal family and took its name from a Scottish family with deep ties to the region. This connection to Malaysian royalty made it a significant symbol of regional power within Singapore's landscape.
Access to the ruins is heavily restricted due to safety concerns marked by warning signs and police tape around the perimeter. The site is surrounded by thick overgrowth, making close inspection difficult and observation from a distance the safer option.
During World War II, the building briefly served as a command center for Australian forces under General Gordon Bennett during the critical days of 1942. This military chapter is less remembered today than the palace's royal history, yet it marks an important moment in Singapore's war memory.
