Tyersall Park

Tyersall Park was originally the site of Istana Tyersall, a grand palace with Corinthian architecture that spread across multiple hectares. The building rose about 70 feet and stretched several hundred feet long, designed with elaborate details and generous proportions.

The Sultan of Johor established his residence at Tyersall in 1862, and the palace was eventually completed in the 1890s. The grounds functioned briefly as a royal home before being repurposed for military use afterward.

The palace served as a meeting place for important guests and dignitaries from around the world during Singapore's early period. Its role as a diplomatic venue shaped how people understood the island's growing status.

The grounds are not open to the public today, as they serve military purposes and function as a secured facility after the original palace was demolished. Visitors can view the area from nearby surroundings and understand how this historic site shaped Singapore's landscape.

Istana Tyersall was the first building in Singapore to have electrical lighting installed during the 19th century. This innovation marked it as a sign of technological progress in the island's early modern history.
