Dhoby Ghaut, Transportation hub at Orchard Road, Singapore
Dhoby Ghaut is a train station on Orchard Road serving as an intersection point for three major rail lines. The station extends underground across five levels and connects to Plaza Singapura mall along with a large network of pedestrian walkways.
Indian washermen settled near a freshwater stream called Sungei Beras Basah in 1819 and shaped the district's identity from that time onward. This early settlement evolved into the transportation hub that stands here today.
The name comes from Hindi words: "dhobi" means washerman and "ghat" means steps to the water. This reflects Singapore's Indian heritage and the workers who once labored in this area.
The station features stairs, elevators, and escalators providing straightforward access to all five levels. Visitors can use the connecting walkways to reach Plaza Singapura or other neighborhoods without stepping above ground.
The station platforms feature art installations such as the Lantern of Music and interchange mosaics representing local cultural elements. These artistic works transform waiting time into a memorable experience for travelers.
