Raffles City, Hotel, office and shopping complex in Singapore
Raffles City is a high-rise shopping center in the Downtown Core of Singapore, combining retail floors with offices and a hotel within a single tower complex. The building spans several levels of shops, restaurants, and cafes, all connected by wide walkways and linked directly to the underground train network.
Raffles City opened in 1986 and was one of the first mixed-use tower complexes in central Singapore. It was designed by architect I. M. Pei, whose firm also designed other landmarks around the world during the same period.
Raffles City serves as a meeting place where locals and visitors gather to shop, dine, or spend time together. During festive seasons like Lunar New Year, the mall transforms with decorative displays and special events that reflect the celebrations of the city.
The center sits directly above City Hall MRT station, so arriving by train means stepping straight into the building regardless of the weather outside. From there, most of the surrounding downtown area is within easy walking distance.
The same architect who designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris was responsible for this building. Many visitors walk through without knowing they are inside a structure by one of the most recognized architects of the 20th century.
