Great World MRT station, MRT station in Singapore
Great World MRT is an underground metro station in River Valley, Singapore, part of the Thomson-East Coast Line and equipped with two island platforms. Located about 21 meters below street level, it connects the neighborhood through modern, well-lit entrances to the Great World shopping mall and nearby residential areas.
The station opened in November 2022 as part of the third phase of the Thomson-East Coast Line project announced in 2012. Construction was demanding, with workers tunneling under existing structures and a canal while facing safety challenges during the pandemic.
The station's name comes from the former Great World amusement park, which shaped the memories of many Singaporeans for decades. Inside, the artwork "Great World, Great Times" by Deanna Ng displays old photographs re-enacted with people today, connecting the area's history with the neighborhood's present life.
The station is easily accessible on foot, with clear signage and multiple entrances along River Valley Road, some added gradually after opening. The facility has elevators and ramps for mobility needs, with trains arriving every 3 to 6 minutes during peak hours to keep waits short.
During construction, a tragic accident involving heavy machinery claimed a worker's life, underscoring the importance of safety measures. This incident led to improved safety protocols in the project and became a turning point in prioritizing worker protection in subsequent phases.
