Pyramid, Archaeological hilltop monument in Maribor, Slovenia.
The Pyramid is a wooded hill in Maribor topped by a white chapel structure, rising approximately 386 meters above the surrounding area. Vineyards blanket the slopes, and from the summit you can see across the Drava River valley and city below.
A castle stood at this location in the 12th century, built by the Spanheim family as a defense against Hungarian attacks. The fortress was gone by the late 1700s, and the religious monument visible today replaced what had once been a military stronghold.
The summit chapel is dedicated to Mary and has served local residents as a place of devotion for centuries. Visitors today can see how the location remains meaningful to the community as a spiritual landmark overlooking Maribor.
Multiple paths lead from Maribor City Park to the summit, with the climb typically taking 15 to 30 minutes. The routes pass through vine-covered slopes and are accessible for visiting year-round.
The stone statue of Mary on the chapel was carved in 1821 and stands as one of the oldest works of religious art at this location. Many visitors pass by without noticing this sculpture, though it can be discovered upon closer inspection.
