National Security Bureau of the Republic of China, Government intelligence agency in Shilin District, Taiwan
The National Security Bureau of the Republic of China is a government intelligence agency in Shilin District, Taiwan. The compound consists of several office buildings where staff coordinate tasks related to protecting state information and monitoring threats to national defense.
The agency was founded in 1949 by intelligence services that had relocated from mainland China to Taiwan. Over the following decades, its responsibilities expanded until it received a new organizational structure in 1994 and introduced greater public accountability.
The transformation of the bureau in 1994 marked a shift toward transparency when senior officials' identities were first revealed to the media.
The facility is not open to the public and serves government personnel exclusively. The buildings are located within a security perimeter in Shilin District, set apart from surrounding civilian areas.
Until 2007, the agency was led exclusively by officers holding the rank of three-star general. The first appointment of a civilian as director marked a shift in how Taiwan structured the leadership of its intelligence services.
