The settlement was established during the Soviet era as part of an administrative system classifying smaller urban centers across Ukraine from 1925 onward. It remained under this Soviet classification until 2024, when the designation was officially abolished.
The linguistic composition of Shakhtne reflects the regional demographics, with 73 percent of residents speaking Russian and 26 percent speaking Ukrainian as their primary language.
