Regional Landscape Park "Donets Ridge", National park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
The Regional Landscape Park Donets Ridge is a protected area in Donetsk Oblast that stretches along a bend of the Donets River and reaches about 367 meters at its highest point. The land features alternating plateaus, slopes, and valleys that invite walking and wildlife observation.
The area formed millions of years ago through complex geological processes as ancient seas advanced and retreated while rock layers were thrust upward. These long transformations created the ridge and layered rocks visible in the landscape today.
The ridge contains ancient burial mounds scattered across its plateaus, evidence of early settlements in eastern Ukraine. These remains are visible from walking trails and speak to the long human presence in this region.
The area is best explored between May and September when weather is favorable for walking and observation activities. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as trails can be steep and sun protection is important.
Beneath the ridge lie thick coal seams from the Carboniferous period alternating with limestone layers that originated from ancient seas. These hidden deposits below the surface explain why this region has long held economic importance.
