Kent Downs

The Kent Downs is a protected natural area in southeast England stretching from the White Cliffs of Dover to the Surrey border. The region combines rolling chalk hills, woodlands, grasslands, and eroded coastal sections into one cohesive landscape.

The area received official protection status in 1968 when it was designated to safeguard this eastern section of the North Downs. The designation emerged from efforts to preserve the geological formations and natural character against modern pressures.

The villages scattered throughout these downs maintain farming traditions that shape daily life and the look of the landscape. Visitors encounter fields managed in time-honored ways and stone cottages that anchor small communities.

Multiple marked walking routes traverse the area, offering options for different fitness levels and interests. Many of these paths remain accessible to people with limited mobility, and the area welcomes visitors throughout the year with particularly verdant conditions in spring and summer.

Three major rivers - Darent, Medway, and Stour - flow through the landscape, carving deep valleys into the chalk formations. These waterways create unexpected green corridors within the rolling terrain and shape the local microclimates.
