Several rail lines connect the town to Glasgow and Edinburgh, with trains stopping in the center. Buses run between residential areas and the station, and walking paths cross the parks and shopping streets.
A canal system from the late 18th century transported coal and raw materials to Glasgow. Today walking paths follow the former course of the waterway through quiet green spaces.
