Burrow Mump, Medieval hilltop ruins in Burrowbridge, England
Burrow Mump is a 24-meter-high hill in the Somerset Levels with the incomplete remains of St Michael's Church crowning its summit. The location offers views across the River Parrett and the surrounding flat countryside.
The site dates to Norman times, with the first church recorded in the 12th century and subsequent structures added in the 15th century.
The National Trust manages this place as a memorial to Somerset residents lost during both World Wars.
Free parking is available at the base of the hill, with walking paths leading to the top. The climb is short, so views reward you even in unsettled weather.
During the English Civil War, Royalist soldiers hid in the church for three days in 1645 before being discovered. Their refuge became part of the place's war story.
