Cwm Dyli, Hydroelectric power station in Beddgelert, Wales
Cwm Dyli is a hydroelectric power station in Beddgelert featuring a rectangular turbine house built from quarry-dressed limestone walls with brown brick accents and a slate roof topped with tiled ridges. Water flows down from the higher Llyn Llydaw through an engineered pipeline system to turn the turbines and generate electricity.
The station was established in 1906 and introduced Alternating Current hydropower technology to Britain, transforming how electricity was generated. It initially supplied power to nearby slate quarries in the region.
The power station's architecture incorporates alpine elements that reflect the industrial heritage of North Wales while harmonizing with the mountainous environment.
The facility sits in the Snowdonia mountains and is accessible via hiking trails from Beddgelert. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and wear sturdy footwear.
The pipeline infrastructure appeared in scenes from the 1999 James Bond film The World Is Not Enough. The movie footage captured this industrial engineering structure in the Welsh mountains.
