Great Carrs, Mountain summit in Lake District National Park, England
Great Carrs is a mountain summit in the Lake District rising to 788 meters, featuring exposed rock formations and steep eastern cliffs that drop into Greenburn valley. The peak is marked by a grass-covered stone cairn at its highest point.
A Royal Canadian Air Force Halifax bomber crashed on the mountain during a navigation exercise in 1944 with wreckage still visible near the summit. This accident left physical remnants that endure as a reminder of wartime aviation activity over the region.
This summit belongs to the Wainwright collection of 214 Lake District peaks, documented in guidebooks from the 1950s and 1960s that shaped how hikers explore the region. The designation has made it a popular destination for fell walkers following the classic routes.
The hike starts from Little Langdale following the Wet Side Edge path for about 4 kilometers to the summit. The ascent becomes steeper in the final sections, so sturdy footwear and experience with fell walking are recommended.
The Greenburn copper mine operated beneath the summit until 1865, reaching depths of 213 meters underground. Hikers can still spot remnants of old water reservoirs used in the mining operation scattered across the landscape.
