Southmead Hospital, hospital in England
Southmead Hospital is a general hospital in the Westbury-on-Trym area of north Bristol, located on Southmead Road. It is made up of several buildings, with the Brunel building being the main structure housing most of the clinical departments.
The hospital has roots in earlier medical facilities in the area, but was fundamentally transformed with the opening of the Brunel building in 2014. This new building replaced older structures on the same site that had served the area for decades.
The hospital is a central point of reference for people across Bristol and the surrounding area. Inside the Brunel building, there are cafes, shops, and waiting areas that give the space a feel closer to a public building than a traditional hospital ward.
The hospital is well served by bus routes with stops near the main entrance, making it easy to reach without a car. For those driving, parking is available on site, including spaces for blue badge holders.
The Brunel building is long enough that a buggy service operates inside it to help people with limited mobility get from one end to the other. The building's name pays tribute to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the engineer behind many of Bristol's most recognizable structures.
