Milecastle 50TW, Military fortification on Hadrian's Wall, England.
Milecastle 50TW is a small Roman fort built into Hadrian's Wall, featuring narrow defensive walls and an original configuration with wooden structures. The site sits between two other milecastles along the continuous barrier that stretches across the landscape.
This milecastle was built under the command of Roman governor Aulus Platorius Nepos during the early construction period of the wall. Excavations in the 1930s revealed timber fortifications and turf walls beneath the visible remains.
This milecastle represents Roman military engineering techniques, demonstrating the integration of wooden towers and gates within earthen fortification systems.
The site sits on rough ground with limited shelter and can become waterlogged after heavy rain. Wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the slight earthen mounds that mark the former structure.
This is the only turf wall milecastle in the entire Hadrian's Wall system that never received a stone wall replacement. This makes it exceptionally rare among the wall's installations and offers insight into the original construction methods.
