Tannery Falls

Tannery Falls is a waterfall in Alger County that plunges over a sandstone cliff through a series of rock channels and drops. The water flows through narrowly confined passages carved into stone, creating a distinctive multi-stage cascade along Tannery Creek.

The area was mapped during early geological surveys of Michigan's Upper Peninsula when settlers documented the region's water resources. These surveys helped establish knowledge of the waterfall as a notable landscape feature in the area.

Local photographers and artists frequently document the seasonal changes of Tannery Falls, capturing winter ice formations and autumn leaf displays.

The trail to the waterfall starts near H-58 and descends via stairs to reach the base. The path requires careful footing over uneven ground and can be slippery, particularly when wet or icy.

A natural cave-like formation behind the waterfall redirects the creek flow through a rock tunnel underneath. This geological oddity is shaped by erosion and creates an unusual sight that many visitors miss.
