Laughing Whitefish Falls Scenic Site, Natural waterfall in Alger County, Michigan, United States
Laughing Whitefish Falls is a waterfall site in Alger County featuring a drop of approximately 30 feet over limestone cliffs, surrounded by forest of white pine and hemlock trees. The site includes three observation platforms connected through a trail system with around 157 steps leading to the lower viewing areas.
The area was designated as a Michigan state park in the mid-20th century to protect its natural geological formations and surrounding forest. This designation recognized the falls as an important natural feature worth preserving for future generations.
The name blends the sound of rushing water with the presence of whitefish that once thrived in local waters, reflecting the natural elements that define this region. Visitors today experience these same sensory details when walking near the cascade.
The half-mile trail is relatively easy to walk, but visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and wet conditions, especially during rainy seasons. The best time to visit is on dry days when the paths are safest to navigate.
During winter months, the water freezes into natural ice formations that transform the cascade into vertical columns of frozen water. This seasonal transformation creates an entirely different landscape for those visiting during colder weather.
