Holy Family Orphanage
Holy Family Orphanage, Historic orphanage in Marquette, United States.
The Holy Family Orphanage is a four-story red brick structure on Altamont Street featuring decorative sandstone details and large windows that face Lake Superior. Its traditional early 1900s architectural style emphasizes solid construction with classical design elements throughout.
The building was constructed in 1915 and served the Upper Peninsula community for more than 50 years before closing its doors. It later underwent a substantial transformation into a residential complex during major renovation work.
The orphanage initially served Native American children from the surrounding region and later provided refuge to families fleeing Cuba during a major humanitarian effort in the 1960s.
The building is now divided into apartment units and is not open to the public for interior tours. Visitors can view the exterior and explore the surrounding neighborhood, which offers views of the lake and nearby recreational areas.
The original chapel remains intact within the complex and continues to serve as a gathering space for current residents. This preserved spiritual space provides a window into the daily practices and values of those who once lived here.
