The Granite Island Lighthouse stands 40 feet tall, built with granite blocks from Huron Islands and decorated with white limestone on corners and windows.
The lighthouse began operations in 1869 with a fourth-order Fresnel lens, serving vessels carrying copper and iron ore from the Keweenaw Peninsula through Lake Superior.
The lighthouse preserves maritime traditions through its architecture, combining a bell tower, keeper's dwelling, and light tower in a design shared with other Great Lakes structures.
The structure contains eight rooms in the keeper's dwelling, while modern energy needs are met through solar panels, wind generators, and a backup power system.
Northern Michigan University uses the island as an Internet relay station, and a weather research facility provides data to the National Weather Service.
