Peter White Public Library, Public library in Marquette, United States.
Peter White Public Library is a public library in downtown Marquette, Michigan, a short walk from the Lake Superior waterfront. The multi-story building offers reading areas, study spaces, and rooms for community events, with both physical and digital collections serving residents from the surrounding townships.
The library was founded in 1891 and moved into its current building in 1904, designed by Chicago architects Patton and Miller. It takes its name from Peter White, one of Marquette's most prominent 19th-century citizens and a key supporter of the institution.
Inside the building, the Marquette Arts and Culture Center hosts rotating exhibitions from local and visiting artists throughout the year. Depending on the season, visitors may also find workshops or opening events happening in the same space.
The library sits in central Marquette within easy walking distance of the waterfront, and signage around the area makes it straightforward to find on foot. On-site parking is available, and the building has accessible entrances for visitors with mobility needs.
In 2010, the library received the National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, one of the rarest honors an American library can receive. What makes this stand out is that the award went to a standalone institution in a small city rather than a large urban system.
