Saugus, Historical town in Essex County, Massachusetts
Located north of Boston, Saugus spans 11 square miles along the Saugus and Pines rivers, with residential areas and commercial districts at 6 meters elevation.
The settlement began in 1629, taking its name from the Pawtucket Native American word meaning 'outlet' in reference to the Saugus River location.
Nearly 100 local men joined the American Revolutionary War after local preacher Parson Joseph Roby delivered influential speeches supporting independence from British rule.
The town maintains multiple legislative districts, including the Massachusetts House of Representatives' 9th Essex district and the Massachusetts Senate's Third Essex district.
George's Barber Shop in the Cliftondale neighborhood holds records as the oldest operating barber establishment in the United States.
