River Works, Aircraft engine manufacturing facility in Lynn, Massachusetts
River Works is a major industrial facility in Lynn, Massachusetts, spanning between Western Avenue and the Boston and Maine Railroad tracks. The complex contains multiple manufacturing buildings and production areas that have served aviation engine production for decades.
The facility started as an aircraft engine manufacturing plant and was converted into a critical production site for superchargers and later jet engines during World War II. After the war, the factory remained important to aviation manufacturing and was eventually acquired by General Electric.
The workers joined the United Electric Workers union in 1936, establishing a strong labor movement presence in the Massachusetts industrial sector.
The MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Line station at River Works provides direct public transit access to the site. Keep in mind this is an active industrial facility, so access to certain areas may be restricted.
The site was originally designated as Air Force Plant 29 and played an important role in developing early jet technology. General Electric acquired the facility in 1983, continuing a long tradition of military and civilian aviation research.
