Monongahela National Forest

Monongahela National Forest spans 919,000 acres across West Virginia, featuring diverse landscapes from rivers to highlands reaching elevations of 1,191 meters.

The United States Forest Service established this protected area in 1915 following extensive logging operations that had depleted much of the region's natural resources.

The forest contains numerous remnants of early American settler life, including old homesteads and logging camps that reflect the region's industrial heritage.

Visitors can access 800 miles of trails throughout the forest, with designated areas for camping, fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation across different skill levels.

The Cranberry Glades Botanical Area contains rare acidic wetlands typically found in northern climates, accessed through a specialized half-mile boardwalk system.
