Davis and Elkins Historic District
Davis and Elkins Historic District, National Historic Landmark District in Elkins, United States
The Davis and Elkins Historic District is a protected landmark area on a college campus featuring Victorian-era mansions and outbuildings. The site contains about 34 contributing structures spread across the grounds, including grand residences, a gatehouse, and a stone icehouse.
The area emerged in 1890 when two prominent political leaders built their private homes at this location. Their residences later became the foundation for establishing a college that still operates on these grounds today.
The mansion architecture reflects Victorian style choices that wealthy families of the 1890s made for their homes. Walking through the campus, you can see how these grand buildings shaped the area and continue to define its appearance today.
The area sits on an active college campus and is accessible to visitors, though some buildings can only be seen during special tours or events. It helps to check ahead about which areas are open since the campus is in daily use and access may vary.
A cylindrical stone structure once used for storing ice has been repurposed as a student coffeehouse within the college. This former cold storage building from the 19th century now serves as a gathering space for those on campus.
