Brookhaven National Laboratory, Research institute in Brookhaven, United States
Brookhaven National Laboratory is a research institute in Brookhaven, New York, focused on particle physics, materials science, and energy studies. The campus spreads across wooded land with clusters of low-rise buildings, large detector halls, and circular beam tunnels visible from certain points on the grounds.
The site opened in 1947 on land once occupied by a military training camp and began with atomic research programs. Over time, the work expanded to include materials research and biomedical projects.
The laboratory brings together 4,000 visiting researchers annually to work alongside 2,750 permanent staff members on projects spanning physics, biology, and environmental science.
The laboratory offers public programs during summer months when visitors can tour selected research areas. Advance registration is required, as the site is not open to casual drop-in visits.
A scientist here created Tennis for Two in 1958, an early interactive electronic game played on an oscilloscope screen. The game was originally built as a demonstration for visitor days and is considered a forerunner of modern video games.
