Escanaba, Port city in Upper Peninsula, Michigan, United States.
Escanaba is a port city on Little Bay de Noc in northern Michigan. The town spreads along the shoreline with a protected natural harbor and several parks that face directly onto the water.
The first European settlers arrived in the 1830s when loggers and fishermen began using the bay. An ore dock was built in 1863 and transformed the place into a major shipping center for the regional mining industry.
The name comes from an Ojibwe expression meaning flat rock or shallow water. Local residents still use the harbor actively for both freight shipping and recreational boats, while the waterfront promenade invites walking year-round.
Visitors should bring warm clothing, as the wind from the lake can feel cool even in summer. Most shops and restaurants sit in the downtown area near the harbor, within a few blocks of each other.
The town sits farther north than Montreal or any major city in Quebec. In winter the bay sometimes freezes solid, forming thick ice sheets that local residents occasionally walk across.
